I was out running errands, and after driving for a couple of miles, turned off the truck, and when I went to start it again, just got the “click. I checked the terminals, and the positive was a little loose, so I tightened it up, jumped it – it started right up – and after checking the gauges to make sure all was well went on my way.
After a couple of miles, the engine shut off – as though you’d turned the key – and then popped right on again! When it was off, all gauges were dead and so was the engine. It came back on – all the way, gauges and everything – within about a second. I parked it, let it sit, and jumped it again. Started right up, all systems go, only this time the lights, gauges, and everything but the engine shut down, with the engine finally dying after maybe another mile or so.

Class AB amps combine the good points of class A and B amps. They have the improved efficiency of class B amps and distortion performance that is a lot closer to that of a class A amp. With such amplifiers, distortion is worst when the signal is low, and generally lowest when the signal is just reaching the point of clipping. Class AB amps like class B use pairs of transistors, both of them being biased slightly ON so that the crossover distortion associated with Class B amps is largely eliminated.
Class C amps are never used for audio circuits. They are commonly used in RF circuits. Class C amplifiers operate the output transistor in a state that results in tremendous distortion it would be totally unsuitable for audio reproduction. However, the RF circuits where Class C amps are used employ filtering so that the final signal is completely acceptable.
Class C amps are quite efficient. Due to improvements in the speed, power capacity and efficiency of modern semiconductor devices, applications using Class D amps have become affordable for the common person. Whereas the aforementioned classes of amplifier operate the semiconductor devices in the linear mode, Class D amplifiers operate the output semiconductor devices as switches ON or OFF. In a Class D amplifier, the input signal is compared with a high frequency triangle wave, resulting in the generation of a Pulse Width Modulation PWM type signal.
The output of the filter drives the speaker. Class D amps are today most often found in car audio subwoofer amplifiers.

Sorry, something has gone wrong. To work properly, an amp-meter must be in series with the entire positive cable feeding the boat’s electrical systems EXCEPT the large cable going directly to the starter. If your battery’s positive terminal has only one large cable hooked to it, you’ll have to trace the cable to the terminal strip or buss panel where you find the large cable that goes directly to the starter motor and the second main positive cable that feeds all the boat’s other electrical systems.
If such doesn’t exist, then you will have to be creative in splitting the boat’s main power line from the starter’s large cable because the amp-meter will be hooked only in series inline with the cable feeding the boat’s main power buss excluding the starter cable. This allows the meter to indicate a discharge when the engine isn’t running, and show the total alternator charge current minus system discharge current to the battery when the engine is running.
Once you’ve got a place to break the main positive cable feeding only the boat’s electrical systems, it’s probably going to be back near the battery and your amp-meter is probably going to be installed up on the boat’s dash or control panel. If you use a standard “inline” or series amp-meter, the cables running to and from the meter back to where you cut the main power cable will be fairly long; so, to prevent loss of voltage voltage drop with higher current demands through a very long battery cable, you should use cable that’s at least the next wire gauge larger than the existing battery cable.
A much easier way of doing this is to shop around for a “remote sensing” amp-meter instead of a conventional “inline” or series meter. The remote-sensing meter has a shunt pickup device that’s quickly connected up between the heavy battery cable ends back at the point where you cut the main cable; then, only two small meter feeding wires are ran forward to the meter itself.
It’s much less hassle to install, and there’s no worry about running expensive heavy cable a long distance that could possibly rub and short out at some later time. Unless you’re really concerned about monitoring the amount of discharge or charge in amps , you can do very well with only a voltmeter that’s installed in the control panel and quickly hooked up with small wires between the ground buss and any 12V fuse terminal that’s “hot” all the time.
How to Diagnose a Car Battery Drain
OK first off, I am thankful for the wiring diagram provided by mbkerk. I have been getting ready to start this little project of installing my amper gauge. However I have hit a little snag and I am really confused. To start with, the amp gauge has a plus and minus terminal on it. Secondly, I have found my fuse but the two red wires which connect into the fuse are coming out of a black condiuit which masks their locations.

Failure to do so may result in injury!! Basically, the extra wiring is: Feed the wire directly through the firewall I fed it through the grommet for the speedometer cable. I used a squeeze-tap connector on the alternator feed just below the firewall connector, where it wasn’t obvious, to tap into the alternator current before it passed through the offending connector. Then a bullet-type terminal for the black wire plugs into the socket on the squeeze-tap , so it’s still possible to remove the engine-side part of the harness without cutting anything.
A ring-type connector was used at the ammeter. The fusible link was conveniently wired into the system at the starter relay. A ring-type connector was used to fasten one end of the fuse link to the large nut on the starter relay which connects to the positive battery terminal. A butt connector was used to connect the fuse link to the red wire. The red wire was then fed through the firewall to the ammeter, where a ring connector was used. The fusible link is a safety factor and was present in the optional amp factory wiring.
This is to prevent dangerous overheating and possible fire if a short develops in this wiring, since this wiring connects directly to the battery. Do NOT add this wiring without it! This duplicates the factory stock wiring per the Dodge Dart factory wiring diagram as close as reasonably possible.
