Nobody wants to be scammed yet most people are not quite sure what to look out for. These are examples of some of the most notorious scams in the world of online dating and on the internet in general. Armed with their fake identity, the scammer proceeds to forge a bond with you. They often communicate with you for weeks and months so you think you are getting to know them better while it is actually all part of their master plan. The standard scam story then starts to unfold as your online date suddenly has some sort of emergency in Nigeria or Ghana. The stories may range from a businessman having an accident while in Nigeria for work to a helpless woman being stranded in Ghana; from asking for charity donations for Africa to a family member having a brain hemorrhage while in Africa. Rest assured, once you do send the money that is the last you will hear of them and your money. Once you do send the money however, it is unlikely that the visit will ever actually materialize. As many people are now catching on to this, many scammers are trying variations of the same scam.

Nigerian Dating Scam – I’ve been there by Catherine Sheffield, UK I am a widow and after just over two years my friends told me to try internet dating. As I was in my 40’s I thought I would join a site for over plus dating which you pay a subscription for and I thought would be safe. I started chatting to a guy who said he was english born but his father was american. He was working for the united nations as an orthapedic surgeon which I thought was a bit of a story but I went along with it.
We were chatting for a few weeks and he suggested going onto messenger as it would save money on subscriptions. He told me things like he was also a widower and told me about his wife etc. This went on for 3 months. I gave him my mobile and he rang me each evening and we would chat for 5 or 10 mins at a cost to him not me. He even rang me when I was on holiday in Spain. When I came back we chatted for another couple of weeks and then he asked me for some money so that he could home and we could be together.
I was so gullible for the love but as soon as he asked me for money I cut him off completely. The best advice I can give you is if anyone asks for money or your bank details to transfer money into – cut them off totally and report them to the site you originally met on. I also did some checking on other sites and also facebook and reported him on each site in a hope that nobody else can be conned by him.

History[ edit ] The modern scam is similar to the Spanish Prisoner scam which dates back to the late 18th century. In exchange for assistance, the scammer promised to share money with the victim in exchange for a small amount of money to bribe prison guards. There are many variants of the letters sent. One of these, sent via postal mail, was addressed to a woman’s husband, and inquired about his health. According to Cormac Herley, a Microsoft researcher, “By sending an email that repels all but the most gullible, the scammer gets the most promising marks to self-select.

Signs of being scammed Be wary. Scammers operate in dating. It does not mean that most Russian girls are scammers. Most Russian girls are serious and real, but they have their own life, they have to work, they want to sleep at night, they have friends. Scammers are very active, they go to one site and write to all men there, then go to another site and write their messages there and so on. Do not fool yourself. Having a photo says nothing about it belonging to the person responding.
That is the main problem in combating scammers online. Many are men, and they know what men fall for; they know the nature of a man better than any women knows, and they know how to make a man lose his head.

In some cases, online dating services are themselves engaged in misrepresentation , displaying profiles which have been fabricated, which use personal information from users who have not agreed to be depicted on the site or by presenting outdated or out-of-region profiles as current and local.

Although in some parts of Africa there are still traditional barriers that a woman is bound to follow, there are also big cities and open minded communities where the African women very much like to meet and fall in love with the men who are not from Africa, especially with the men from the western world. Another very serious issue of dating the girls of Africa is choosing the exact country of which you want your partner from.
As Africa is actually a continent, not a country, the choices can be endless. The girls of each country are different from each other, their thoughts, attributes are definitely different from each others. Prior to dating, you should keep in mind these different factors. The women of Nigeria are opposing this custom as it makes them feel like a commodity rather than a person.
