The solenoid is an electromagnet that pulls an iron rod core into itself when energized. The rod is connected to an electric switch that turns on the starter motor. The rod is also mechanically connected to a spring loaded lever to push the starter motor pinion gear into the ring gear of the fly wheel, thereby connecting the starter motor to the engine. When the ignition switch is released from “start”, no electricity flows to the solenoid and the spring pulls the pinion gear back from the ring gear preventing it from grinding when the engine starts.
The solenoid does a lot of work and therefore demands a lot of voltage and current to work properly. A common problem with Z ignitions is that not enough voltage is received by the starter solenoid to pull the lever, so the starter is not turned on and the pinion gear does not contact the fly wheel ring gear. Only a “click” can be heard as the solenoid jumps but fails to pull the lever all the way. This is because voltage through the ignition start circuit drops too much on the long trip from the battery through a small gage wire to the fuse block, across two buss fuse contacts, through thin wires to the ignition switch, across dirty and worn contacts in the ignition switch, and out a thin wire to the starter solenoid.
Making matters worse, there is a huge drop in battery voltage when the starter motor tries to kick in. Several of the Zs I have owned experienced the problem of only clicking when the ignition switch is turned. This article shows a way to provide a improved voltage and current to a starter solenoid for a reliable and strong start.
Below is a picture showing an inelegant, but functional, arrangement of a relay circuit that vastly improved starting in my Z. Wire 3 should have a fuse in line. Installing Fog Lights to a Fuse Box by Don Bowman Introduction When installing fog lights to a fuse in the fuse box, the amperage must be considered and the appropriate circuit must be used. Fog lights would overload low amp circuits and blow a fuse. First of all, it is not recommended or advisable from a mechanic’s standpoint to run a high amp draw line into the cabin of a vehicle. All high amp draw lights, fans and so on, are activated under the hood with the use of a relay.
The reason for this is that anything that draws a lot of amps tends to heat the wire to some extent. A failure of the insulation causing a short will cause wire-melting heat and sparks and an imminent fire.
The fog lights are positioned first, the switch second, and the relay last. Since the switch will be on the dash and the fog lights at the front of the car, the only location decision to be made concerns the relay. I want the relay in a protected place near the front of the car. It needs to be near a 12V power source.
At a guess, each bulb could be anywhere from 50 watts to watts open one up and read the wattage on the back of the bulb. Plan for the high end; five times is watts, which is If this is the case, you are talking about BIG wire, probably at least two circuits and two relays. Even if the bulbs are smaller than that, assume you may eventually replace them with bulbs of different wattage.
Go BIG on wiring, With that many lights, depending on beam pattern, you may want to aim the outboard lights to the sides. You may even want one aimed to the rear three circuits?
